Pix Aid

  Budget
Pix-Aid would like to contribute 20,000 dollars a year to the irrigation of these 14 villages. The duration of the project is five years and has already begun in 2006. We hope to begin our contributions in 2007. This project is the result of the success of a similar project which is now being extended to other villages and includes not only irrigation pipes, but instruction for farmers in the new techniques, seeds and fertilizers to help diversify the diet of the people in these high mountain villages as well as 110 cattle.

Beneficiary Villages:

Chilcani, Mosocllacta, Tactabamba (Province Acomayo), Pamparqui (Province Yanaoca), Paullo Ayllo, Patabamaba, Sihua (Province Calca), Huillcapata (Province Cusco), Soroccocha , Taucamarca (Province Paucartambo), Mollebamba, Occoran, Usi, Yaucat (Province Quispicanchi). A total of 3,612 hectares or 8,925 acres of arable land.

These 14 villages comprise 1355 families with a total of 7,450 inhabitants. The population is made up of indigenous people at the bottom of the social ladder. Only 9.1% of the land is now irrigated permitting a maximum of one harvest per year. During construction, a technical committee will be formed in each community in order to organize working teams directed by the project chief. The villagers themselves will participate in these teams as part of their contribution to the project. The work will mostly be digging the trenches for the PVC pipes.  Qualified workers will also be recruted from the different communes for the installation of pipes and the construction of tanks to capture and hold water.

Women play an important role in the project as they usually take care of small family plots of land. Irrigation of these plots will allow them to diversify the food for the family. She can also sell excess production in the market, giving her a certain independence vis-à-vis from her husband.
